The Kamnik–Savinja Alps boast more than 30 peaks rising above 2,000 meters. There are many popular mountain tours that hikers climb in all seasons, while friendly caretakers offer refreshments in numerous mountain huts. In the words of the top Slovenian alpinist Marko Prezelj, recipient of four prestigious Piolet d'Or awards, their main advantage is their "variety and manageability." He also notes that here, "in all seasons, we can find ourselves in diverse situations and conditions, while being able to design our tours very differently from start to finish. This accessible diversity, combined with the opportunity to simultaneously enjoy nature, is rare in the world."
Several paths lead to Grintovec, which at 2,558 meters is the highest peak of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps. While the routes from Jezersko and Kokra are considered more demanding, the trail from Kamniška Bistrica is technically quite straightforward. However, the ascent is still no walk in the park, as it requires excellent physical fitness to conquer nearly 2,000 meters of elevation gain. Although it is known as one of the most accessible 2,000-meter peaks in Slovenia, Grintovec truly captivates hikers with its stunning vistas. The summit opens up unforgettable views of the Ljubljana Basin, Jezersko, and neighboring peaks, stretching all the way to the Karawanks and the Julian Alps on a clear day.
On the way to the summit of Grintovec, hikers can stop and rest at the Cojzova Hut on Kokra Saddle, though for many, this popular spot is a rewarding final destination in itself. Standing on the saddle between the mighty Grintovec and the picturesque Kalška Gora since the late 19th century, the hut is named after the brothers Žiga and Karl Zois. During the summer season, when its doors are open daily, it provides visitors with delicious home-cooked meals, refreshing drinks, and comfortable overnight lodging in the very heart of the mountains.
An easy and well-marked trail leads from the Kamniška Bistrica Valley to the Kamnik Saddle, taking just under four hours. The path first winds through a pleasant forest, then rises across a vast, boulder-strewn clearing and up scenic grassy slopes all the way to the hut. The Kamnik Hut is nestled on the sunny side of the saddle, framed by the mighty peaks of Brana and Planjava. Managed by the Kamnik Alpine Association, it is open daily from June to October, while during the colder months, it offers welcome shelter and refreshments on weekends.
Storžič is a mighty and prominent peak that practically calls out to be visited. A popular trail from Mače leads you across a scenic mountain pasture to the Kališče Mountain Hut (Dom na Kališču), which is the perfect spot for a quick break. From the hut, you continue along a panoramic ridge toward the summit. The final stretch of the climb runs along steeper and somewhat exposed slopes, where more caution is needed, especially in wet conditions. At the top, you are rewarded with a breathtaking view and a distinct fenced-in cross.
Via Ferrata Češka koča is the first sports via ferrata in the Slovenian Alps, offering a thrilling climb and breathtaking views of the Ravenska Kočna valley on the way to the iconic Češka koča hut. This challenging route (300 m elevation gain, 320 m steel cable, approx. 90 min climb) requires full protective gear and is not suitable for beginners without a guide. As the route can remain covered in snow through spring and up until June, please check current conditions at TIC Jezersko before your visit.
